No matter how good you site looks poor content will always show through.

This site for instance has seen many large and small changes over the past years to get to where it is today, it is now small and compact and has far less useless pages that turned people away, and the content is ( I hope ) direct and to the point, with no confusing rambling texts and overdone graphics slowing it down. Trust me when I say that your site is organic and over time will grow and change shape but you must not let it grow out of control every now and then get the pruners out and cut out the dead wood

The only content you need must be written in a way that shows you know what you are talking about, and not drowned in pictures, adverts and flash banners. They all have their place but don’t end up with a Christmas tree of adverts that takes forever to load or people will get bored and wander off. Another thing to avoid is not really knowing what your writing about, for instance there are hundreds of sites telling you how to make millions from blogging but most will just be trying to sell you one product after another each one supposedly better than the last that have found some secret niche or formula that will make you rich! Most however won’t work.

Original informed or unique content is what you need to succeed in the online world.

Twitter is a great way to advertise your web site or blog to generate traffic.

Of course Twitter is just one social site to help promote your new site, you can also create a Facebook page and use your news feed to promote new products but in both of the above cases once people are following you then they already know about you and you will always need fresh traffic to keep you site profitable but don’t neglect your existing readers and a good way of keeping in contact is to use a mailing list so you can send adverts and announcements directly to their in box.

Mailing lists can be either hosted within your HostGator control panel or elsewhere with a mailing list company like Adweber. The first option requires some programming knowledge and is a bit of a pain and the second one can become quite expensive if you are just starting out, so I use a free system that was included in the software I used to build this site, it is called Serif Web Plus XP4 and is a fantastic piece of software for the money with some truly surprising features for the money.
